Assignment: Choose a recent, peer-reviewed journal article (see options below) and then find a press article that discusses the journal article. Write a paper that explains the original research and analyzes how accurately the news article presents the research. Your paper should address the following issues: 1. Summarize and explain the research presented in the journal article, including hypothesis/questions, methods, results, and significance. 2. Compare and contrast the research as presented by the press article with that from the original research article. Your analysis can cover any aspect of the research (e.g. methodology, conclusions, implications, etc.). 3. Your conclusions on how accurately the press article represented the original research, and what, if any, inaccuracies or misrepresentations are present in the press article. Journal Article Options: the following is a list of four peer-reviewed journal articles for you to choose from. NOTE: Most of these articles may seem very short, however, most of them (if not all) have a large amount of information that is included in an online supplement. This typically relates to details (or all) of the methods and/or additional results that were not included in the main article due to space (many journals have very strict page limits). I strongly recommend looking also at the supplementary material before making your selection. If you go to the link for each article you can typically find a link for the supplementary material. Some of these journals track when the article has been picked up by a news outlet. If you click on the link to go to the article on the journal’s website you may see, depending on the journal, a tab labeled “Info and Metrics” or “Altmetric”. These give a breakdown of all the times the article has been mentioned in the media, including which news outlets have picked it up.
