An important example of homeostasis is thermoregulation. Thermoregulation is used to maintain an organism’s internal core temperature and return it to homeostasis, a state of equilibrium. Our planet, Earth is currently experiencing climate change at an accelerated rate, with global temperatures on the rise. This will inevitably alter an organism’s external environment, its habitat. For this essay, you are asked to choose one specific multicellular organism and discuss the actions it uses to maintain its internal temperature through the process of thermoregulation. Then propose how a change in the temperature of its external environment, as a result of climate change, may affect its ability to achieve temperature homeostasis.
